Smarter ballast calculations

Our updated calculation engine delivers more favourable ballast distributions for ValkPro+ and ValkPro+ Max Next Gen. By making full use of validated wind tunnel and Aref test data, many projects require less ballast, resulting in lower material usage, reduced roof loads and more efficient installations.

Read the statement below for more information about the updated calculation methodology.

Validated calculation methodology

In the ballast calculations for the ValkPro+ and ValkPro+ Max Next Gen systems, Van der Valk Solar Systems applies the calculation rules as prescribed in the Eurocode standards and corresponding national annexes, in combination with extensive wind tunnel testing conducted by Peutz and CSTB.

Van der Valk Solar Systems is unique in having carried out advanced Aref (reference area) testing and fully integrating the outcomes into both strength and ballast calculations, in both vertical (lift) and horizontal (shear) directions. These validated test results demonstrate that the ValkPro+ and ValkPro+ Max Next Gen systems delivers significantly higher structural performance compared to conventional mounting systems.

Why ballast requirements have changed

Our systems are engineered using thicker, high-grade materials, combined with robust and carefully designed connections. The proven structural performance derived from wind tunnel and Aref testing enable a significant reduction in the required ballast for the ValkPro+ and ValkPro+ Max next gen systems in many cases. This results in lower roof loads and an extended range of applicability, particularly for projects where roof load capacity is a limiting factor.

Updated calculations in ValkPVplannerPro

The improved ballast calculation methodology has been developed and implemented within our design software ValkPVplannerPro. Consequently, ballast values calculated using this new approach may differ from those derived from the previous methodology.

Continuous development

At the same time, in response to evolving climate conditions and the increasing occurrence of extreme weather events, Van der Valk Solar Systems continuously reviews and refines its calculation methods. Where relevant, additional safety margins are incorporated, while remaining fully compliant with the applicable Eurocode standards and national annexes, ensuring both regulatory compliance and future-proof system performance.
